Prof. Caliò at the 2025 Engineering Structures Forum Series: new perspectives on the assessment and seismic retrofitting of existing buildings
The next session of the 2025 Engineering Structures (America/Europe) Academic Forum Series will feature Prof. Ivo Caliò, one of the leading international experts in the field of seismic vulnerability of existing structures. His talk will focus on the latest analysis strategies and retrofit solutions for buildings not originally designed according to seismic criteria.
Assessment and intervention: advanced approaches and real case studies
Prof. Caliò will present an in-depth overview of the main structural issues affecting masonry and reinforced concrete buildings constructed before the introduction of seismic design codes, with particular attention to:
- advanced nonlinear analysis models,
- numerical and experimental assessment of seismic response,
- traditional techniques and innovative retrofit methods,
- the contribution of next-generation dissipative devices,
- case studies on real buildings and laboratory-tested prototypes.
Part of the presentation will be devoted to the application of the Discrete Macro-Element Method (DMEM), a methodology that has significantly expanded the possibilities for modelling masonry structures and has become a benchmark in both the scientific literature and professional practice, forming the basis of Gruppo Sismica software.

Who is Prof. Ivo Caliò
Ivo Caliò is a Full Professor of Structural Mechanics at the University of Catania. After earning his PhD in Structural Engineering in 1995, he developed an academic career entirely focused on nonlinear dynamics, seismic vulnerability, and the study of the behaviour of masonry structures.
He has led a large research group devoted to the advanced modelling of historic structures, carrying out work that led to the development of the Discrete Macro-Element Method (DMEM) — now widely recognised and applied within the international scientific community.
Over the years, he has supervised numerous PhD students and researchers and has collaborated with academic institutions and technical bodies in several countries. His work has led to the creation of two benchmark software solutions in the field:
- 3DMacro, for the seismic analysis of masonry buildings;
- HiStrA (Historical Structure Analysis), dedicated to historic vaulted structures and masonry bridges.
Author of more than 200 publications in international journals and conference proceedings, his scientific and practical contribution is regarded as central to the development of innovative tools for the analysis and strengthening of the existing built heritage.
